A 1,000-kg consignment of Assam’s GI-tagged Tezpur litchi has been exported to Dubai, opening international market access for local growers and boosting the state’s agri-export ambitions
Guwahati: Assam’s globally recognised Tezpur litchi has made its international debut, with a 1,000-kg consignment being shipped to Dubai in a landmark step for the state’s horticulture and export sectors.
Facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the shipment marks the first overseas export of the Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged fruit, renowned for its vibrant red colour, rich aroma, juicy pulp and distinctive sweetness.
Cultivated primarily in and around Tezpur, the fruit enjoys a strong regional identity. Popular varieties such as Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji and Sahi are widely valued for their flavour and quality.
Welcoming the development, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the export would strengthen the presence of Northeast India’s agricultural products in global markets. “The first export consignment of Assam’s renowned Tezpur litchi has been shipped to Dubai. This step will give the region’s litchi global recognition and create new opportunities for farmers,” Goyal said.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the export as a reflection of Assam’s growing agricultural potential. “Our vision is clear — empower farmers, expand exports and take Assam’s finest products to the world. The export of 1,000 kg of GI-tagged Tezpur litchi to Dubai showcases our farmers’ potential,” the Chief Minister said.
Officials believe the shipment could pave the way for larger exports in the future, helping farmers access premium international markets while strengthening Assam’s rural economy.
