The Morigaon administration cancelled the proposed satellite township survey near Tata’s semiconductor project after strong opposition from Tiwa and Bodo groups

Morigaon: The Assam government has suspended the survey process for a proposed satellite township near the upcoming Tata semiconductor facility in Morigaon district following widespread protests from tribal organisations.
Morigaon District Commissioner Anamika Tewari issued an official order cancelling the survey with immediate effect after several groups raised objections to the project. The administration had been conducting surveys in Sindhisar, Naldhara and Bihita villages near Jagiroad to prepare a rehabilitation and resettlement plan linked to the proposed township.
However, the move triggered strong resistance among residents of the Gobha tribal belt, particularly members of the Tiwa and Bodo communities, who feared displacement from their ancestral villages.
Over the past three days, the All Tiwa Students’ Union and several other tribal bodies staged demonstrations demanding complete withdrawal of the township proposal instead of a temporary halt to survey activities.
Officials said the township was planned to support the upcoming Tata Electronics Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) plant being developed at Jagiroad. The Rs 27,000-crore semiconductor project is expected to produce nearly 48 million chips daily using advanced packaging technologies, including flip chip and Integrated System in Package (ISIP).
Meanwhile, the district administration said the survey was stopped after considering concerns raised by local organisations and stakeholders.
