The senior advocate and BCCI Secretary returns as the state’s top law officer in one of the first major decisions of the Himanta Biswa Sarma 2.0 government

Guwahati: The Assam government has reappointed senior advocate Devajit Lon Saikia as the Advocate General of the state for another five-year term, reaffirming its confidence in one of Assam’s most prominent legal figures.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision after the cabinet meeting of the newly formed NDA government, held a day after the swearing-in ceremony.
Saikia had stepped down from the post on May 6 following the completion of the previous government’s tenure, in line with constitutional practice. His resignation came shortly after the BJP-led NDA secured a decisive mandate in the Assam Assembly elections.
First appointed in 2021, Saikia became the youngest Advocate General in Assam’s history at the age of 52. Over the last term, he served as the principal legal advisor to the state government and appeared in several important constitutional and administrative matters.
Beyond the legal arena, Saikia also holds a significant position in Indian cricket administration. A former first-class cricketer and past secretary of the Assam Cricket Association, he currently serves as Honorary Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India after succeeding Jay Shah.
With that appointment, Saikia became the first individual from the Northeast to serve as BCCI Secretary and currently represents the board on the ICC panel.
