No Relief Yet for Shyamkanu Mahanta as Gauhati HC Defers Bail Hearing

The accused in the Zubeen Garg death case had moved the High Court after a lower court earlier denied him bail

Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on Wednesday declined to hear the bail petition filed by Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the mysterious death case involving Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

The matter came up before the bench of Justice Parthiv Jyoti Saikia, which directed that the plea be placed before a different bench for further consideration instead of proceeding with the hearing.

Speaking on the development, Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kumar, appearing for the Assam government, said the High Court registry would now assign the matter to another bench in accordance with procedure.

Mahanta had recently approached the High Court seeking bail after the Fast Track Court earlier rejected his application in the sensational case, which has drawn widespread public attention across Assam.

The petition was listed for hearing on Wednesday, but the court chose not to entertain the matter at this stage. The next hearing date is expected to be decided after the registry reassigns the case.

The investigation into the case linked to the death of Zubeen Garg continues to remain under close public and legal scrutiny.
