From Austerity Measures to Job Push: Assam Cabinet Takes Key Decisions in First Meeting

The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led cabinet also announced austerity measures, fuel-saving directives, convoy cuts and a roadmap for two lakh government jobs

Guwahati: Signalling a strong push towards fiscal discipline and lean governance, the Assam Cabinet on Tuesday imposed a six-month restriction on foreign travel for ministers and government officials, including privately funded visits.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision after the first cabinet meeting of the newly sworn-in NDA government in Guwahati. He clarified that only emergency or medical travel would be permitted with prior approval from the Chief Minister’s Office.

“No ministers or government officers will be allowed to travel abroad for the next six months, whether officially or unofficially, even at personal expense,” Sarma said.

The cabinet simultaneously unveiled a broader austerity roadmap aimed at reducing non-essential expenditure across departments. The government suspended the purchase of new official vehicles for six months and directed departments to reduce petrol and diesel consumption by 20 percent. Additionally, VIP convoys, including those of the Governor and Chief Minister, will be downsized to limit logistical costs.

The state has also banned the procurement of foreign-made items for official use during the six-month period. Departments have also been instructed to avoid physical seminars and workshops, with meetings shifting largely to virtual platforms.

The government further approved the formation of a task force to prepare a roadmap for generating two lakh government jobs over the next five years.

Subsequently, the Chief Minister informed that the Assembly session will be held on May 21, 22, 25 and 26, during which newly elected MLAs will take the oath.
