After being unanimously elected leader of the BJP and NDA legislature parties, Sarma received the Governor’s approval to form the new government and will take oath on May 12 in Guwahati

Guwahati: Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to begin a second consecutive term as Assam Chief Minister after being unanimously elected leader of both the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party on Sunday, clearing the way for the formation of the new government.
The announcement came after a key meeting of NDA legislators in Guwahati, where BJP president J.P. Nadda confirmed Sarma’s selection. Soon after, Sarma and senior NDA leaders met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhavan and formally staked claim to form the government.
In an official notification issued under Article 164(1) of the Constitution, the Governor appointed Sarma as Chief Minister and invited him to form the next government. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for May 12 at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other senior leaders expected to attend.

Calling it a “historic occasion,” Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia said preparations for the ceremony were underway on a large scale. AGP president Atul Bora described Sarma’s re-election as a “matter of good fortune,” while BJP leaders, including Shiladitya Dev and Bhupen Kumar Borah, reiterated full support for his leadership.
The BJP-led NDA secured 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly, returning to power in Assam for a third straight term.
Security arrangements have also been significantly tightened across Guwahati ahead of the ceremony. Barricades, checkpoints and heavy police deployment were seen around the Khanapara venue as authorities intensified preparations for the high-profile event expected to draw top political leaders, officials and supporters from across the state.
