Guwahati: Placing leadership clarity at the forefront, the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) on Wednesday appointed its key faces in the legislature, with party president Atul Bora unanimously elected as leader and executive president Keshab Mahanta named deputy leader. The decisions were taken during the party’s first legislature meeting after the Assembly results, held at its Ambari headquarters in Guwahati.

The meeting, chaired by Bora, was attended by senior leader and MP Phani Bhusan Choudhury, along with all 10 newly elected MLAs. Following structured discussions, the party moved quickly to formalise its internal hierarchy. Atul Bora, the Bokakhat MLA will head the legislative wing, while Kaliabor MLA Keshab Mahanta will assist him as deputy.

In addition, AGP completed its legislative team by appointing Dimoria MLA Tapan Das as party secretary and Bajali MLA Dharmeswar Ray as chief whip, ensuring organisational coordination within the Assembly.

Addressing the media, Bora underlined a collective commitment to governance. “All our legislators have pledged to work selflessly for their constituencies and contribute to Assam’s overall development,” he said, while also thanking voters for their continued support.

Later, the legislature party formally proposed the name of Himanta Biswa Sarma for the Chief Minister’s post, citing his performance in governance and development over the past five years.

The meeting signals AGP’s intent to strengthen its role within the ruling alliance and maintain cohesion within the BJP-led NDA in Assam.
