Raijor Dal’s Akhil Gogoi Rebuts Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Sivasagar Claim

Gogoi cites two rallies by the Chief Minister, calls the remarks “false,” and highlights his 17,272 vote victory over the BJP’s Kushal Dowari

Guwahati: Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi on May 6 strongly countered Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of misrepresenting his role in the Sivasagar campaign during the 2026 Assembly elections.

Responding to media queries, Gogoi asserted that Sarma personally campaigned twice in the constituency to back BJP candidate Kushal Dowari. He pointed to a large rally at Talatal Ghar on March 15, which he claimed drew nearly 20,000 women and included cheque distribution, creating “significant political pressure.” He further added that the Chief Minister addressed another public meeting at Bali Field on April 7.

Gogoi criticised Sarma’s statement as misleading. “If anyone claims that no campaign took place in Sivasagar, I can produce evidence. He held two major meetings against me,” Gogoi said. He added, “He is not telling the truth. He repeats this pattern. Now he says he did not campaign, which is simply incorrect.”

Expanding his attack, Gogoi alleged that despite extensive campaigning and use of administrative machinery, the BJP failed to secure a win. “Even after campaigning twice, he could not ensure victory for his candidate. Now he is making excuses,” he said. He further remarked that while opposition forces may face pressure, “he cannot be silenced.”

Notably, Gogoi retained the Sivasagar seat with 86,521 votes, defeating Kushal Dowari by a margin of 17,272 votes in a closely watched contest.
