From personal loss linked to the RG Kar Medical College tragedy to a broader call for justice, Ratna Debnath’s message resonates strongly in Panihati

West Bengal: Ratna Debnath of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a firm lead in the Panihati Assembly constituency, emerging as a key figure in one of West Bengal’s most closely watched contests. According to the latest counting figures, she has secured 56,167 votes, placing her ahead of Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Tirthankar Ghosh, who has polled 35,704 votes. This gives her a margin of 20,463 votes as counting progresses.
A major emotional and political undercurrent of her campaign has been the RG Kar Medical College tragedy involving her daughter, which became a reference point in public discourse throughout the election. Debnath repeatedly framed her appeal around systemic accountability, stating, “This election is about whether people feel safe and whether justice is truly delivered.” She further added, “No family should ever go through what mine experienced. That reality has shaped my fight.”
Further behind, Communist Party candidate Kalatan Dasgupta has managed 14,729 votes, reflecting a widening gap between the top contenders and the rest of the field. The updated numbers indicate a clear consolidation of support in favour of Debnath, as she maintains a steady lead across counting rounds.
As counting continues, Panihati has emerged as a high-stakes battleground, with Debnath’s performance signalling a significant challenge to established political equations in the region.
