BJP secures decisive victory in key Assam constituency after 14 rounds; Gogoi trails throughout counting despite early contest

Jorhat: In a significant electoral outcome, Gaurav Gogoi has lost the Jorhat Assembly seat in Assam, with Hitendra Nath Goswami of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registering a decisive victory. According to data released by the Election Commission of India, Goswami secured a total of 69,439 votes, while Gogoi finished with 46,257 votes after the completion of all 14 rounds of counting.
The final margin of victory stood at 23,182 votes, underlining a clear mandate in favour of the BJP candidate in what was widely seen as a high-profile contest. Notably, trends throughout the counting process consistently showed Goswami maintaining a comfortable lead. After 13 rounds, he had already polled 63,508 votes, compared to Gogoi’s 43,882, indicating an early and sustained advantage.
Goswami, the sitting BJP MLA from the constituency, has had a long political career. He previously served as the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly between 2017 and 2021. Before joining the BJP in 2014, he was associated with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), but later shifted allegiance citing leadership concerns while maintaining a strong anti-Congress stance.
The Jorhat seat had emerged as one of the most closely watched constituencies in Assam, given Gogoi’s prominence as a Congress Member of Parliament. However, despite expectations of a tight race, the results reflected a decisive shift in voter preference.
With this outcome, the BJP has not only retained the seat but also reinforced its political footing in Upper Assam.
