Strong global demand, refined processing and premium plucking methods drive historic price surge

Gangtok: Sikkim’s state-run Temi Tea Estate has set a new benchmark this season, with its first flush organic tea commanding an unprecedented price of Rs 27,000 per kilogram. The achievement highlights both the estate’s quality-focused approach and the growing global appetite for premium organic teas.
The first flush, prized for its delicate flavour and refined character, has drawn strong interest from buyers across domestic and international markets. Notably, the initial batches offered through open bidding received an “overwhelming response,” while subsequent lots have continued to attract competitive demand.
At present, the estate is actively harvesting fresh leaves and producing high-end varieties, including orthodox black tea and oolong tea. Officials attribute the record pricing to a combination of traditional precision and modern innovation. Only the finest “bud and two leaves” are handpicked, ensuring superior quality at the source.
Moreover, the estate has upgraded its processing system by replacing coal-based firing with a cleaner LPG-based method. This shift has not only improved efficiency but also enhanced the overall quality of the tea while reducing environmental impact.
With these advancements, Temi Tea is positioning itself more strongly in the global premium segment. The management remains optimistic about sustaining demand and has set a target of producing around 1 lakh kg of made tea this season.
As a result, the record-breaking price signals more than just a commercial success. It reflects a broader shift towards quality-driven production, where sustainability and craftsmanship together define market value.
