Clarification dismisses earlier reports of firing in Jerai Gaon, says noise came from a nearby birthday celebration

Guwahati: Putting an end to speculation, the Assam Police on April 13 clarified that there was no firing incident at the residence of Paresh Baruah in Jerai Gaon, Dibrugarh.

According to officials, the sounds reported shortly after midnight were misinterpreted. “The noises heard around 12:04 am and 12:05 am were caused by firecrackers and not gunshots,” a police statement said.

Investigations revealed that the fireworks were part of a birthday celebration taking place roughly 150 metres away from the residence, which led to confusion among residents and triggered initial alarm.

Earlier accounts had suggested that unidentified individuals had opened fire near the premises, raising concerns over security in the area. However, authorities have now firmly ruled out any such possibility after verifying the source of the sound.

Police emphasised that there was no breach of law and order and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information. The clarification has helped ease tensions in the locality, where fear had briefly gripped residents following the circulation of the initial reports.
