Seat-sharing deal between Congress and Raijor Dal signals sharper opposition strategy to consolidate anti-incumbency votes ahead of polls

Guwahati: In a key step towards opposition consolidation in Assam, the alliance between Akhil Gogoi and Gaurav Gogoi has been formalised, with the Indian National Congress allocating 11 Assembly constituencies to the Raijor Dal ahead of the 2026 elections.
Under the agreement, Raijor Dal will contest from Sivasagar, Dalgaon, Dhing, Sissiborgaon, Digboi, Bokakhat, Manas, Tezpur, Kaliabor, Margherita and Mariani, while Goalpara East and Gauripur have been designated as “friendly contest” seats.
Addressing the media earlier, Gaurav Gogoi said the Congress has already formed an alliance with Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist), Liberation and All Party Hill Leaders Conference, and is working to expand the coalition further.
The Congress leader further noted that discussions with Raijor Dal had been underway as part of efforts to build a broader anti-BJP front against the government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma.
