UPPL Exits NDA Ahead of Assam Polls: Announces Independent Electoral Strategy

UPPL Vice President Dr R. N. Sinha cites ideological differences with the BJP, flags concerns over ‘Hindu Rastra’ agenda: party to contest all 15 BTR seats

Kokrajhar: The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has formally announced its exit from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), citing deep-rooted ideological differences with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The move marks a significant political shift ahead of the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections.

Addressing the media in Kokrajhar, UPPL Vice President R. N. Sinha said the decision followed prolonged disagreements with its former ally, adding that the party will now pursue an independent electoral path.

Underscoring the ideological divide, Sinha stated, “The primary objective of NDA is to transform India into a Hindu nation, aligned with the broader framework of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).” He further alleged that such an agenda could undermine constitutional safeguards, including reservation policies. He further appealed to tribal, ST, SC, OBC and minority communities to remain vigilant.

Highlighting UPPL’s campaign strategy, he said, “We believe in working independently. Our candidates are highly deserving and qualified. Our focus is on creating awareness and unity among the masses.” He added that seven candidates have already been announced, with more to follow shortly.

The UPPL will contest all 15 constituencies in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). The first list, approved by party president Pramod Boro, includes key leaders such as Aninda Basumatary, Raju Kumar Narzary and Lawrence Islary.

With the Model Code of Conduct in force under the Election Commission of India, the UPPL’s solo move is expected to reshape the electoral dynamics in the region.
