The AASU President says six months on, but no permanent constructions have begun at the tribute site dedicated to Zubeen Garg: calls for transparency and actions from authorities

Guwahati: All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) President, Utpal Sarma, has raised concerns over the condition of Zubeen Kshetra, the tribute site dedicated to noted Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. He stated that no permanent construction work has begun, even six months after the site was established.
Sarma said that the condition of the tribute site, even after six months, reflects a serious lapse on the part of the government. He asserts that such negligence cannot be justified with any excuse.
The AASU President alleged that the condition of the kshetra worsens during rain or harsh weather, as water accumulates around the area. In response, members of Zubeen Garg’s family have reportedly set up temporary tents with tarpaulin so that visitors can continue paying their respects.
He further pointed out that the government had earlier formed a construction committee for the development of Zubeen Kshetra. However, it remains unclear what proposals the committee has submitted or what progress has been made in the construction work.
Emphasising that lakhs of people in Assam remain emotionally connected to Zubeen Garg, Sarma urged the committee to make the status of the work public so that citizens are informed about the progress.
Furthermore, he also noted that with the election code of conduct now in force, the government may cite administrative constraints. He appealed that such circumstances should not be used as an excuse to justify delays, stressing that the issue concerns public sentiment and collective memory.
