Govt tables interim plans, Opposition raises justice and price rise as final pre-poll session opens in Guwahati

Guwahati: The final Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly before the upcoming elections began on a politically charged note, blending governance priorities with sharp protests from the Opposition.
While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party focused on outlining its development roadmap and financial planning, Congress legislators staged demonstrations inside the House, demanding justice in the death of singer Zubeen Garg and raising concerns over rising prices and law-and-order issues.
Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika detailed the session’s agenda, emphasising that this is not a full budget but a short Vote on Account exercise.
“We have to tell people what we will do if we come back to power. This is not a full budget; we have a four-day budget session. Today, the Governor will give his speech. There will be a discussion on it. Tomorrow, the Finance Minister will lay the Vote on Account. That too will be debated, and after four days, the session will conclude,” Hazarika said.
Finance Minister Ajanta Neog is scheduled to present the interim budget, which will cover government expenditure until a full-fledged budget is introduced later.
The session is expected to witness heated exchanges, with the Indian National Congress and other Opposition parties sharpening attacks on the government, turning what is usually a routine financial exercise into a high-voltage political battleground ahead of the polls.
