PM Narendra Modi to Unveil Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu Under Rs 5,450 Crore Northeast Push

Six-lane extradosed bridge to redefine Guwahati–North Guwahati connectivity as part of Rs 5,450 crore development push across the Northeast

Guwahati: Blending cutting-edge engineering with architectural elegance, the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu is poised to emerge as one of Assam’s most striking infrastructure landmarks. The six-lane extradosed bridge across the Brahmaputra will be inspected and inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi, marking a major step in the state’s urban and transport transformation.

Designed as a high-performance extradosed Prestressed Concrete structure, the bridge uniquely blends the strength of cable-stayed technology with the stability of conventional girder systems. Spanning 1.24 km with a width of 33 metres, and supported by multi-span 200-metre extradosed segments, the sleek structure creates a modern silhouette over the river while ensuring long-term durability.

Engineers have incorporated advanced features such as friction pendulum bearings for superior seismic resistance, high-performance stay cables, M70-grade concrete for heavy load endurance, and a real-time Bridge Health Monitoring System for early damage detection and safety. Architectural façade lighting further enhances its identity, turning the bridge into a night-time landmark.

Along with 2.86 km of flyovers and 3.65 km of approach roads, the nearly Rs 3,000-crore project will reduce travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati to just minutes, easing congestion and accelerating growth across the State Capital Region. It is also the first extradosed bridge of its kind in Northeast India.

The inauguration forms part of the Prime Minister’s broader Assam visit on February 14, during which he will attend an airshow at the newly developed Emergency Landing Facility in Dibrugarh and launch projects worth over Rs 5,450 crore. These include a National Data Centre at Amingaon, the permanent campus of IIM Guwahati, and the rollout of electric buses to strengthen urban mobility.

More than just a transport corridor, the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu stands as a symbol of Assam’s leap towards world-class infrastructure, modern design, and future-ready connectivity.
