Assam Showcases Strong SDG Progress at North-East Regional Workshop in Guwahati

State transitions from ‘Aspirant’ to ‘Front Runner’ in SDG India Index under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership

Guwahati: Assam’s steady strides toward sustainable and inclusive development were highlighted at the ‘North-Eastern Region Workshop on Enhancing SDG Outcomes at District Level’, held in Guwahati on Tuesday. The event brought together policymakers, experts and administrators to review progress and strengthen district-level implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the region.

Cabinet Minister Charan Boro, who attended the workshop, expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the opportunity to present the state’s achievements and ongoing initiatives. He noted that Assam’s development journey has gained fresh momentum under the Chief Minister’s guidance, enabling the state to make measurable progress across multiple socio-economic indicators.

Once categorised as an ‘Aspirant’ state, Assam has now emerged as a ‘Front Runner’ in the SDG India Index. This transformation reflects improvements in governance, infrastructure, health, education and livelihoods. A significant rise in per capita income from Rs 81,034 to Rs 1,59,185 further underscores the positive impact of growth reaching communities at the grassroots level.

The workshop also focused on strengthening coordination between districts and stakeholders to ensure that development benefits are both inclusive and sustainable. With Vision 2030 in sight, the state reaffirmed its commitment to people-centric policies that aim to leave no one behind.

Senior representatives from NITI Aayog, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), along with officials from various North Eastern states, participated in the discussions. The gathering served as a platform for sharing best practices and reinforcing collaborative efforts to accelerate progress across the region.

Assam’s achievements stand as a testament to focused planning and determined leadership driving meaningful change.
