Assam CM Announces Rs 1,000 Crore Development Package on 24th Bodoland Day

CM unveils major infrastructure push at Kokrajhar; Mohilary pays tribute to martyrs, calls for unity

Kokrajhar: Marking the 24th Bodoland Day, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced a Rs 1,000-crore development package for the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and Rs 2 lakh financial assistance each for 15,000 youths to promote self-employment, reaffirming the government’s commitment to accelerated growth and stability in the region.

The announcements were made during a ceremonial programme held at Green Field, Bodofa Nagar, Kokrajhar. The ceremony saw the presence of Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) Chief and BTC Chief Executive Member Hagrama Mohilary, along with several Cabinet colleagues and MLAs.

The funds will support roads, bridges and key infrastructure works, alongside initiatives to strengthen livelihoods, cultural promotion and institutional development. The Chief Minister also announced support for the construction of a Boro Bhawan in Chennai and measures to promote traditional art forms such as Bihu, Jhumur and Bagurumba.

Describing BTR as a region of “peace, prosperity and happiness,” Sarma recalled that the BTC Accord, signed in 2003 under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, laid the foundation for lasting development. He noted that the early phase of implementation was challenging and that he personally monitored the process through regular visits to Kokrajhar.

The BTC Chief Executive Member Hagrama Mohilary paid an emotional tribute to the martyrs of the Bodoland movement, calling them the architects of the region’s identity and autonomy. He said, “Their blood watered the soil of our homeland, their sacrifices forged the path to autonomy and dignity we walk today,” and ensured dignity and rights for future generations.

Hagrama also emphasised communal harmony, acknowledging the support of non-Bodo communities in achieving peace. “They gave their assent, they trusted the process, and they cooperated with the government so this peace could happen without more blood.” He further states that, “let’s live together like a real family—respect each other…Only unity will make Bodoland stronger and brighter for our children.”
