Pakistan Reverses Boycott: Set to Face India in T20 World Cup on February 15

Government directs team to play after week-long talks with ICC and regional boards

Mumbai: In a dramatic turnaround, the Government of Pakistan on February 9 officially directed its men’s cricket team to take the field against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match scheduled for February 15 in Colombo, ending days of uncertainty over a proposed boycott.

The decision follows nearly a week of negotiations between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the International Cricket Council (ICC), and regional cricket bodies. Notably, it was the same government that had earlier announced Pakistan would not play India, before reversing the stance.

In an official statement, the Government of Pakistan said the move was taken “to protect the spirit of cricket” and to support the continuity of the global tournament, adding that the decision came after requests from friendly nations including Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was formally briefed by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi before directing the team to honour its fixture.

“The Government of Pakistan hereby directs the Pakistan National Cricket Team to take the field on February 15, 2026,” the statement read, extending best wishes to the “Men in Green.” The ICC welcomed the development, reaffirming its commitment to cooperation and tournament integrity.

“The dialogue between ICC and PCB took place as part of a broader engagement… recognising the need for constructive dealings… and ensuring that the ongoing edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is a success,” the global body said.

Earlier, Bangladesh had urged Pakistan to reconsider its decision, while PCB officials had hinted at a possible U-turn during the Pakistan Super League auction in Lahore.

With the impasse now resolved, the much-anticipated India–Pakistan clash will proceed as scheduled, restoring one of cricket’s biggest rivalries to the tournament calendar. Pakistan will next face the USA on February 10, having already secured a win against the Netherlands in their opening match.
