Lakhimpur Gets Rs 154 Cr Boost: University Campus, Phase II Funds & Kalatirtha Opened

New academic complex, staff housing and cultural infrastructure mark major push for higher education and heritage development in Narayanpur

Narayanpur: Lakhimpur’s Narayanpur town witnessed a major stride in both education and cultural infrastructure as Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a series of landmark projects aimed at strengthening the region’s academic ecosystem and preserving Assam’s spiritual and artistic heritage.

The highlight of the day was the inauguration of the newly constructed campus of Madhabdev University, built at an estimated cost of nearly Rs.57 crore. Originally established in 1964 as Narayanpur College and later upgraded to Madhabdev College, the institution was accorded state university status in 2017 and continues to play a vital role in shaping the educational landscape of Upper Assam.

Spread across 55 bighas, the modern campus houses a four-storey academic block, residences for the Vice Chancellor, Registrar and faculty members, a two-storey guest house, and a grand entrance gate. The facilities are designed to provide an improved learning environment for students and better working conditions for educators.

Addressing a large gathering after the inauguration, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to higher education and announced an additional Rs.75 crore under Phase II for further expansion and holistic development of the university. The next phase will focus on strengthening infrastructure, enhancing academic resources and transforming the institution into a robust centre of excellence.

Extending the focus to cultural development, the Chief Minister inaugurated the newly built Sri Sri Badala Padma Ata Kalatirtha at the Sri Sri Madhabdev Kalakshetra. Constructed at a cost of Rs.22 crore, the 681-seat auditorium is equipped with state-of-the-art acoustics, advanced stage lighting systems, mechanised curtains and a large LED screen.

Furthermore, named in honour of Sri Sri Badala Padma Ata, the last disciple of Srimanta Madhabdev, the Kalatirtha is envisioned as a vibrant hub for art, theatre and cultural performances, enriching the cultural life of the Narayanpur–Bihpuria region.

The day also underscored the government’s commitment to preserving Assam’s Vaishnavite heritage. The Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for infrastructure development at the historic Belaguri Satra, a revered institution established in 1618 and later relocated to Narayanpur. With an allocation of Rs.20 lakh, the project aims to improve facilities at the Satra, which has long served as a centre of faith, education and social reform.

Together, the initiatives mark a comprehensive push to blend education, culture and heritage, positioning Narayanpur as an emerging hub of learning and tradition in Assam.
