Arijit Singh Announces Retirement from Playback Singing

Bollywood’s soulful voice calls time on film playback career, leaving behind a legacy of timeless hits and emotional resonance

Guwahati: In a moment that has left millions of listeners emotional, celebrated singer Arijit Singh has announced his retirement from playback singing. Sharing a heartfelt New Year message with fans, the singer confirmed that he will no longer take up new assignments as a playback vocalist, marking the end of an era in Indian film music.

“I want to thank you all for giving me so much of love all these years as listeners,” Arijit wrote, expressing gratitude to the audience that stood by him throughout his journey. He added, “I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”

Arijit Singh’s rise in the music industry was anything but overnight. Beginning his career as a contestant on the reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005, he spent years working behind the scenes as a music programmer before destiny found its turning point. That moment arrived in 2013 with “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2, a song that not only transformed his life but also redefined romantic music in Bollywood. The track became an anthem of love and heartbreak, cementing Arijit’s place in the hearts of listeners across generations.

Over the years, his voice became inseparable from some of Hindi cinema’s most memorable moments. Songs like “Channa Mereya,” “Agar Tum Saath Ho,” “Raabta,” “Shayad,” “Kesariya,” and “Phir Le Aaya Dil” showcased his rare ability to convey vulnerability and depth, often turning songs into emotional experiences rather than just chart-toppers.

Arijit’s achievements reflect his impact on the industry. With multiple National Film Awards, Filmfare wins, and countless accolades, he emerged as one of the most influential playback singers of modern Indian cinema. Yet, despite his immense success, he remained known for his quiet demeanour, simplicity, and focus on the music rather than the spotlight.

While his decision to step away from playback singing signals a profound shift for Bollywood, it also stands as a graceful conclusion to a remarkable chapter. As Arijit Singh himself summed it up, “It was a wonderful journey.” And for millions who found comfort, love, and healing in his voice, that journey will continue to live on through his songs.
