“This is Not Development, It is Destruction”: Rahul Gandhi Slams Great Nicobar Project

Opposition leader raises concerns over environmental damage and tribal rights, vows to take issue to Parliament

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Centre’s Rs 81,000 crore Great Nicobar infrastructure project, describing it as “one of the biggest scams and gravest crimes against this country’s natural and tribal heritage.”

During his visit to Campbell Bay, Gandhi expressed deep concern over the scale of environmental impact, stating, “What I have seen is not a project. It is millions of trees marked for the axe. It is 160 square kilometres of rainforest condemned to die.” He further added, “This is not development. This is destruction dressed in development’s language.” Taking to his social media platform, Gandhi raised concerns over the impact of the project:

Moreover, Gandhi highlighted the human cost of the project, claiming that local communities have been sidelined. “Communities have been ignored while their homes have been snatched away,” he said, alleging a lack of consultation and transparency. He also termed the initiative a “wholesale theft” of ecological and community resources.

At the same time, Gandhi noted that residents had urged him to raise the matter nationally. “This needs to be told to the whole nation… I will raise it in Parliament,” he asserted.

However, the Centre has defended the project, stating that it will boost maritime trade, connectivity, and national security. The plan includes a transshipment terminal, power plant, and township.
