Tangkhul Naga Long demands removal of an Assam Rifles post along NH-202 and action against personnel accused of using force on women protesters during recent demonstrations

Imphal: The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has announced a 24-hour total shutdown across its jurisdiction from 7 pm on June 8, escalating opposition to the recently established Assam Rifles outpost at New Heaven along National Highway-202.
The decision was taken during a Joint Co-ordination Meeting held on Sunday, where participants resolved to intensify their demand for the removal of the security post and seek legal action against personnel accused of using excessive force during recent protests.
In a statement, the organisation alleged that women participating in demonstrations at New Heaven, Shokvao and Finch Corner were subjected to assault while protesting peacefully against the outpost’s establishment. TNL said the shutdown aims to press for what it termed “appropriate criminal action” against those responsible.
The organisation also reiterated its demand for the immediate dismantling of the Assam Rifles installation, arguing that local concerns over the outpost have remained unaddressed.
While calling for widespread participation, TNL clarified that essential services will remain exempt from the shutdown. Medical facilities, water supply, electricity services and media operations have been excluded to minimise disruption to critical public services.
The protest comes amid rising tensions in the region, where local residents and civil society groups have increasingly voiced opposition to the outpost. As of filing this report, authorities had not issued an official response to the demands raised by the organisation.
