Guwahati: Ramanuj Goswami, the prime accused in the murder of his 25-year-old wife Riya Talukdar Goswami in Guwahati’s Hatigaon area, died early Monday after sustaining injuries in a fall near Narakasur Hills while in police custody.

According to police, Goswami was being taken from Hatigaon Police Station to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) through Kahilipara for a blood test when he allegedly attempted to escape and fell near Narakasur Hills.

GMCH Superintendent Dr. Devajit Choudhury said Goswami had no gunshot injuries and that the injuries were consistent with a fall. He was brought to the hospital at around 3:41 am and declared brought dead.

Goswami had been arrested in connection with Riya’s alleged murder after her body was recovered from their rented flat in Basisthapur on September 6. Police suspected she had been killed following an altercation between the couple.

The circumstances surrounding Goswami’s death are likely to come under scrutiny. His body has been sent for post-mortem, with the examination expected to establish the exact cause of death.
