New Double-Deck Saraighat Bridge to Boost Guwahati’s Rail-Road Connectivity

The 1.3-km double-decker bridge will carry two railway lines and a three-lane road across the Brahmaputra, as part of the Agthori-Kamakhya rail doubling project

Guwahati: The Second Saraighat Rail-cum-Road Bridge project is moving towards the construction stage, with piling work scheduled to begin in October 2026 as part of the 7.20-km Agthori-Kamakhya railway doubling project.

Sanctioned by the Ministry of Railways in 2024, the project is being executed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T). Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said geotechnical investigations have been completed, while major engineering designs and construction drawings are being prepared.

The centrepiece of the project is a 1.3-km double-decker bridge over the Brahmaputra. The lower deck will carry two railway lines, while the upper deck will accommodate a three-lane road and a footpath.

The bridge will feature a welded Open Web Girder superstructure with 125-metre main spans and will be built on well foundations. Approach viaducts of around 600 metres on the Agthori side and 200 metres on the Kamakhya side will connect it to the existing transport network.

NFR said land acquisition, encroachment removal and utility shifting had presented challenges in the densely developed area, although substantial progress has been made with support from the Assam government and local administration. L&T has begun mobilisation and preparatory activities, with construction expected to accelerate during the current financial year.

Once completed, the additional railway line and three-lane road are expected to increase the corridor’s capacity and improve the movement of passenger and freight traffic between Guwahati’s northern and southern banks.
