Steps down to enable fair probe; stresses transparency and public trust over holding office

Nepal: Nepal’s Home Minister Sudan Gurung resigned on April 22, stepping down amid scrutiny over his financial disclosures and emphasising the need for accountability in public life.
In a statement shared on social media, Gurung said he chose to resign to ensure an impartial investigation into concerns surrounding his shareholdings. He noted that although he had carried out his duties “with honesty” since assuming office on March 26, the questions raised required him to take responsibility.
Highlighting the importance of public trust, Gurung stated, “Ethical values must come before any position of power.” He added that stepping aside would help avoid any perception of conflict of interest while allowing authorities to conduct a fair inquiry.
Furthermore, he acknowledged the growing demand for transparency, particularly from younger citizens, and said such expectations must be respected. Gurung also linked his decision to the broader responsibility of maintaining institutional integrity, especially in a political system shaped by past struggles.
Importantly, he confirmed that his resignation takes immediate effect and urged citizens, media, and civil society to continue promoting honesty and accountability in governance.
The development comes shortly after Prime Minister Balendra Shah removed Labour Minister Deepak Kumar Sah earlier this month, signalling a stronger push for discipline and ethical conduct within the government.
