Nagaland rider’s international victory signals growing global presence of Indian showjumping talent

Dimapur: In a historic moment for Indian equestrian sport, Nagaland’s Kekhriesilie Rio secured a Grand Prix victory at the Haras de Liverdy competition in France, riding Presley OL. The win not only highlights Rio’s individual excellence but also marks a significant milestone for Indian riders competing on the global stage.
Reacting to the achievement, Abu Metha, Vice-President of the Athletics Federation of India, described it as a “remarkable moment” for Indian showjumping. He noted that Rio’s success reflects how “young athletes can reach the highest levels when given the right opportunities,” while also congratulating him for bringing pride to Nagaland.
Rio’s journey to international recognition has been built on consistent performances. He first made his mark by finishing third in the Junior National Equestrian Championship (Endurance) in Dibrugarh during 2014–15. Subsequently, he went on to win the Junior National Show Jumping title in Kolkata in 2018, establishing himself as a rising talent.
His global breakthrough came in 2019 with a second-place finish at the Asian Equestrian Federation Junior/Young Jumping Challenge. He continued his upward trajectory in 2020, achieving a world No. 2 ranking and topping Asia in Category A at the FEI World Show Jumping Challenge in Bengaluru. In 2021, he further strengthened his credentials with a podium finish at the Senior National Championships in New Delhi.
Consequently, Rio’s latest triumph underscores India’s growing footprint in international equestrian sport.
