Northeast Frontier Railway will restart Jan Shatabdi and local passenger services on the Jiribam–Khongsang section after security clearance, boosting connectivity between Tripura, Assam and Manipur
Imphal: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) will restore the Agartala–Khongsang Jan Shatabdi Express and local passenger train services on the Jiribam–Khongsang section after a three-year suspension caused by ethnic unrest in Manipur. Officials said train operations will resume every Friday following successful security assessments and trial runs.
The 348-km route connects Tripura and Assam with Khongsang in Manipur’s Noney district, with the journey taking around seven hours and 40 minutes. Before services were suspended, the Jan Shatabdi Express operated on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The restored service is a key milestone in the construction of the 111-km Jiribam–Imphal railway line, which is targeted for completion by December 2028.
At present, the 55.36-km Jiribam–Khongsang section is operational, while work continues on the remaining stretches. Once completed, the Rs 22,274.57 crore railway project will provide a direct rail link between Imphal and the rest of India, featuring eight new stations, 62 km of tunnels and 11 major bridges, and reducing travel time between Jiribam and Imphal to under two-and-a-half hours.
