ANSAM has urged Manipur University to strengthen its ST/SC Cell, establish CUET centres in hill districts and address postgraduate admission concerns
Imphal: The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has urged Manipur University to address several long-pending issues affecting tribal students, including the functioning of the ST/SC Cell, postgraduate admissions and the lack of CUET examination centres in the state’s hill districts.
In a memorandum submitted to the Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday, the student body called for immediate reforms to improve student welfare and academic accessibility.
ANSAM alleged that the university’s Scheduled Tribe/Scheduled Caste (ST/SC) Cell exists only on paper despite UGC guidelines, and demanded that it be made fully operational to oversee reservation policies, safeguard the interests of reserved-category students and staff, and provide an effective grievance redressal mechanism.
The association also opposed postgraduate admissions being conducted solely through CUET, arguing that the absence of National Testing Agency (NTA) examination centres in hill districts such as Ukhrul, Senapati, Churachandpur, Tamenglong and Chandel places tribal students at a disadvantage.
It urged the university to coordinate with the NTA and the UGC to establish CUET centres in the hill districts. ANSAM further objected to the reported conversion of vacant ST seats into SC seats, alleging it violates reservation laws, and proposed a separate state-level entrance examination for postgraduate admissions until adequate CUET infrastructure is in place.
