Lovlina Borgohain Qualifies for Asian and Commonwealth Games After Dominant Trial Win

Olympic bronze medallist secures India berth in women’s 75kg category with commanding victory at national boxing trials in Patiala

Guwahati: Lovlina Borgohain has officially secured her place in India’s boxing squads for both the 2026 Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games after an impressive performance at the national selection trials in Patiala.

The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist delivered a dominant display in the women’s 75kg final, defeating Sanamacha Chanu 5-0 to seal qualification for two of the biggest international sporting events of the year.

With the victory, Lovlina will now represent India at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2 and the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, beginning September 19.

The 28-year-old boxer from Assam had earlier missed direct qualification after failing to reach the final at the Asian Boxing Championships in Ulaanbaatar. However, she bounced back strongly during the national trials to confirm her spot.

Lovlina remains one of India’s most decorated women boxers. Apart from winning bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, she also claimed gold at the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and bronze medals at the 2018 and 2019 AIBA World Championships. She is also the first woman athlete from Assam to compete at the Olympics and received the Arjuna Award in 2020.

Meanwhile, rising boxer Sakshi Chaudhary also impressed by defeating world champion Minakshi Hooda 5-0 in the women’s 51kg final.
