Guwahati–Delhi in Under 8 Hours: Bullet Train Corridor Set to Bring Assam Closer to the Capital

The Chief Minister said the extension from Siliguri to Guwahati was approved following his request to the Union Railway Minister, opening up new connectivity prospects for the Northeast

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the proposed extension of the Northern bullet train corridor to Guwahati, describing it as a significant development for the Northeast.

In a post on X on November 1, the Chief Minister said the corridor was initially planned to end at Siliguri but was extended to Guwahati following his written request and a meeting with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in July.

The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vaishnaw for approving the proposal. He also highlighted the potential of high-speed rail connectivity to strengthen links between Guwahati and Delhi, suggesting that the journey could take less than eight hours.

The Chief Minister said improved connectivity would create opportunities for businesses and livelihoods as Assam prepares for growth in high-tech industries. He added that faster and more accessible connections to Delhi and other state capitals could support the region’s economic development.

Calling the extension a milestone for eastern India, the Chief Minister said a bullet train connection to Assam had once seemed like a distant possibility.
