Floodwaters have affected 13 districts, with Patna and several riverine areas facing rising water levels, erosion threats and evacuation challenges
Patna: The flood situation in Bihar has worsened, with eight major rivers flowing above their respective danger marks on Thursday, affecting normal life across 13 districts.
The Ganga, Son, Punpun, Kosi, Gandak, Burhi Gandak, Bagmati and Ghaghara rivers have recorded rising water levels. Patna remains on high alert as the Ganga, Son and Punpun have crossed their danger marks.
At Gandhi Ghat, the Ganga is flowing 127 cm above the danger mark, while at Digha Ghat it is 61 cm above the limit. At Shripalpur, the Punpun is around 2.01 metres above the danger mark, with floodwaters entering nearby houses.
More than 5.54 lakh cusecs of water has been released from Indrapuri Barrage into the Son, spreading across riverine areas of Maner, Danapur, Bakhtiyarpur and Mokama.
The administration has deployed 12 government boats to evacuate stranded residents. In Samastipur’s Mohiuddinnagar, the Ganga has risen around 1.50 metres above the danger mark.
In Bhagalpur, severe erosion along the Ganga has raised concerns over the Raghopur-Kazikoraiya embankment and the railway’s tagging dam. Around 200 tractors and three steamers are being used to transport sandbags for anti-erosion work. In Rohtas’ Nauhatta, around 100 people stranded on river islets are being evacuated as the Son continues to rise.
The Disaster Management Department has directed officials to assess damage to crops, livestock and houses and prepare lists of affected families for relief assistance.
