Assam’s Strategic Brahmaputra Tunnel Project Takes Centre Stage as CM Unveils Major Connectivity Plans

Himanta Biswa Sarma says Gohpur–Numaligarh underwater tunnel is driven by national security needs; major connectivity projects set to reshape transport across Assam

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outlined a series of major infrastructure projects that he said will significantly strengthen the state’s connectivity and strategic preparedness, including the proposed Gohpur–Numaligarh underwater tunnel, a second rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra and a new expressway linking Siliguri to Silchar.

Describing the underwater tunnel as a project of national importance, the Chief Minister said its purpose extends beyond transportation and economic returns.

“The underwater tunnel between Gohpur and Numaligarh is an example of the strategic importance of Assam in the larger vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister. The project is not being driven by vehicular demand or economic profit,” he said.

The Chief Minister noted that key bridges across the Brahmaputra play a crucial role in connecting north and south Assam. However, he pointed out that such infrastructure could become vulnerable during emergencies or conflict situations. The tunnel, he said, is intended to ensure uninterrupted connectivity even under extraordinary circumstances.

The Chief Minister also revealed that a second rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra is progressing and will improve rail movement between Assam and the rest of the country. “This will ensure enhanced rail traffic and speed,” he said after reviewing the project with stakeholders.

In another major announcement, the Chief Minister said a formal declaration of the proposed Siliguri–Silchar Expressway will be made soon. According to him, the corridor will dramatically reduce travel time, enabling commuters to cover the distance from the Assam–West Bengal border to Silchar in about six hours.

Together, the projects are expected to transform both connectivity and strategic infrastructure across Assam
