Proposed council will coordinate between the UGC, state government and universities, while the government also announces support for flood-affected students and schools
Guwahati: The Assam government introduced the Assam Higher Education Council Bill, 2026, in the Legislative Assembly, proposing an apex body to strengthen governance and academic coordination in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Introducing the Bill, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said the proposed council would serve as an intermediary between the University Grants Commission (UGC), the state government and universities, addressing the absence of a dedicated institution to coordinate academic and administrative matters.
The council will comprise a General Council and an Executive Council, with representatives from universities, autonomous colleges, general colleges and the UGC.
Pegu also updated the House on flood relief measures for the education sector. He said fresh textbooks for students in Sivasagar and Charaideo would be distributed within two days, while nearly 1.5 lakh students would receive new school uniforms. Restoration of damaged schools will begin after assessment reports are submitted by the NDRF and SDRF.
According to the government’s preliminary assessment, nearly 80 per cent of schools in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat have been affected by the recent floods.
