Chandrapur: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma performed the Bhumi Pujan and laid the foundation stone for ISRO’s ISTRAC Advanced Radar Research Facility (IARRF) at Chandrapur, marking a major step in strengthening India’s space surveillance capabilities.
The facility, being developed under ISRO’s Project NETRA, will track satellites, rocket bodies and space debris, including objects as small as 10 cm, at distances of up to 2,000 km. It will deploy phased-array radars and optical telescopes to monitor objects in orbit and help reduce collision risks amid growing space congestion.
The project is being developed on nearly 200 bighas of land provided by the Assam government. The Chief Minister said the facility would bring advanced space technology and training opportunities to the Northeast.
The Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for selecting Assam for the strategic project and invited ISRO Chairman Dr V. Narayanan to visit the recently inaugurated Science City at Sonapur.
