Assam’s Nameri Tiger Reserve records a fourfold rise in tiger population, with WII validating the increase from three to 12 tigers since 2022
Guwahati: Assam’s Nameri Tiger Reserve has recorded a fourfold increase in its tiger population over the past three years, with the number of big cats rising from just three in 2022 to 12 by the end of 2025, according to the latest assessment validated by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII).
Sharing the development on Friday, Forest and Environment Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah described the achievement as a major conservation milestone for the state.
“From just three tigers in 2022 to 12 by the end of 2025, Nameri Tiger Reserve has scripted a remarkable conservation success, validated by the Wildlife Institute of India,” Baruah said in a post on X. He credited the improvement to sustained conservation measures and the state government’s continued efforts to strengthen wildlife protection.
The minister also announced the return of two tigers to the Sonai-Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary, the satellite core of the Nameri Tiger Reserve, after decades of absence. He said the development reflects the improving habitat and ecological health of the landscape.
Nameri Tiger Reserve comprises Nameri National Park, Sonai-Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Naduar and Balipara Reserve Forests. Nameri National Park, spread over nearly 200 square kilometres, forms the reserve’s core area, while the approximately 120-square-kilometre Sonai-Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary serves as its satellite core.
The latest figures are being viewed as a significant boost to Assam’s wildlife conservation efforts and underscore the success of habitat protection and anti-poaching measures in one of the state’s key tiger landscapes.
