AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi urged stronger action against unscientific mining and environmental degradation linked to floods in Upper Assam
Guwahati: Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi has called for stronger and long-term government measures against unscientific coal mining, indiscriminate sand and stone extraction and other forms of environmental degradation in Upper Assam.
Speaking at a citizens’ meeting organised by the Conscious Citizens’ Society at MC Club in Nazira, Gogoi questioned the lack of lasting measures despite years of mining, hill destruction and disruption of natural river flows. He said relief distribution after floods was not enough and urged the government to address the environmental factors contributing to recurring disasters.
“Allowing the destruction of nature and then distributing relief after floods is not a solution,” Gogoi said, calling for scientifically sound policies and stronger protection of Assam’s natural resources. He also stressed the need for greater public awareness and collective efforts to protect forests, hills, rivers and other ecological assets.
The meeting focused on open coal mining, unregulated extraction of sand and stone, and the increasing severity of floods across Upper Assam. Participants called for sustained public pressure and stronger institutional intervention to curb environmental degradation and reduce the region’s vulnerability to recurring floods.
