The Bodo student body backed Wangchuk’s peaceful movement over alleged NEET irregularities and appealed to the Centre to resolve the issue through dialogue
Guwahati: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) has appealed to social activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk to withdraw his indefinite hunger strike while urging the Centre to immediately begin dialogue to resolve the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
Addressing the media in Kokrajhar, ABSU president Khwrwmdao Wary said Wangchuk’s health should not be put at further risk, even as the movement for students’ rights continues. Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike for 18 days over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
“We support the democratic movement taking place at Jantar Mantar,” Wary said, adding that Wangchuk has raised important issues concerning education and students’ rights.
Describing Sonam Wangchuk as a climate activist, educationist and recipient of the Upendranath Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award, Wary said his commitment to humanity and education deserved recognition. He said the activist has consistently advocated transparency in education policy and error-free conduct of competitive examinations, issues that directly affect millions of students.
Calling the demands genuine, Wary urged the Government of India to engage with the protest leaders and work towards a solution through dialogue. He also appealed to Wangchuk to prioritise his health and end the fast, saying his leadership remains vital for the long-term struggle for students’ rights.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has agreed to hear a public interest litigation on July 16 seeking urgent medical intervention for Wangchuk and requesting authorities to initiate talks with him.
