Nitin Gadkari Unveils Rs 213 Crore Kamakhya Ropeway Project in Assam

Centre and Assam government highlighted a blend of modern infrastructure and spiritual heritage under ‘Vikas Bhi Virasat Bhi’ initiative

Guwahati: With the proposed project of constructing the Kamakhya Ropeway worth Rs 213.24 crores, Assam is likely to take a giant leap towards the construction of facilities associated with the pilgrimage in the region. The project, intended to connect Kamakhya railway station to the revered Maa Kamakhya Temple, is proposed to be constructed as a combination of contemporary technologies alongside the preservation of the revered site. The proposed project is intended to span an area of 1.43 km.

While making the announcement, the Minister for India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, said, “Transform sacred journeys with modern infrastructure.” He further adds, “ This project reflects the spirit of ‘Vikas Bhi Virasat Bhi’, by reducing travel time from 20 to 6 minutes, enabling the movement of over 16,500 passengers daily through modern gondolas”

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma echoed these sentiments, calling the project a new chapter in the history of pilgrimage travel. Expressing gratitude to the Union Minister, the Chief Minister stated, “Giving new momentum to sacred journeys.” The project aims to significantly enhance convenience for devotees visiting the temple. “It will enhance pilgrim convenience, promote eco-friendly mobility, boost tourism & create local livelihoods.” He added that the project is a fine example of development that respects tradition, while creating livelihoods and strengthening Assam’s tourism economy.

Besides improving connectivity, the ropeway is expected to reduce vehicular pressure on the surrounding areas and provide a cleaner, more sustainable mode of transport in the temple area. Once operational, it will not only ease the journey for pilgrims but also position Kamakhya as a model for integrating heritage sites with world-class infrastructure.

The project highlighted an expanding sense of shared vision between the Centre and the state to ensure that development and cultural legacy progress together.
