AAMSU (All Assam Minority Students Union) alleged harassment of genuine voters, warns of legal action against officials

Dhubri: Amid rising political tension, the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) on January 21 held a massive sit-in demonstration outside the Dhubri District Commissioner’s office. The main objective of the demonstration was against alleged irregularities in the ongoing Special Revision of electoral rolls. The organisation alleged that the district administration had failed to safeguard the rights of the genuine citizens during the revision process.
The protest witnessed effective sloganeering against the state leadership, with the protesters focusing on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and MP Dilip Saikia. The leaders of AAMSU claimed that the process of revising the electoral rolls is being used to intimidate the minority communities in the name of verification.
In their address to the gathering, the leaders of AAMSU stated that eligible Indian citizens are being arbitrarily questioned and denied entry into the electoral rolls without any proper legal basis. They also stated that grievances filed at the grassroots level are being disregarded, and grassroots-level officials are functioning in a biased manner.
AAMSU general secretary Alfaruque Asikur Rahman warned that the organisation would initiate legal actions against the Booth Level Officers and election officials if the harassment of genuine citizens, as he termed it, does not stop immediately. He said that the union would not hesitate to go to court to safeguard the voting rights of the citizens.
During the protest, AAMSU submitted a memorandum to the Dhubri District Commissioner, demanding strict action against the officials who allegedly bypassed the legal procedures and a fair and transparent revision process.
The district administration, however, asserted that the Special Revision of the electoral rolls is being carried out strictly as per the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India. Despite this, AAMSU has warned that it would intensify its agitation in Assam if its concerns are not addressed immediately.
