PM Modi Visits Somnath Temple on Millennium of Historic Attack

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage as Somnath marked 1,000 years since the 1026 desecration of the shrine

Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Somnath Temple in Gujarat on Saturday, coinciding with the completion of 1,000 years since the historic attack on the temple in January 1026 by Mahmud of Ghazni. Prayers marked the visit to the revered shrine, which holds a central place in Hindu religious and cultural history.

Somnath, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, has long been seen as a symbol of faith, resilience, and continuity, having been rebuilt several times after repeated destruction over the centuries. Historical accounts record that local defenders resisted Mahmud of Ghazni’s forces for several days before being overwhelmed. The temple was damaged, its wealth looted, and many lives were lost. The episode is widely cited as one of the earliest large-scale attacks on a major Hindu place of worship during medieval invasions of the subcontinent.

Over the following centuries, several other prominent temples across India faced destruction or desecration during periods of conflict and foreign rule. These included shrines at Ayodhya, Mathura, and Kashi, sites that continue to hold deep religious and historical significance.

The modern Somnath Temple stands as a reconstructed monument, restored after Independence with the support of national leaders who viewed its revival as part of India’s cultural renewal. Today, it attracts millions of devotees and visitors from across the country and abroad.

The Prime Minister’s visit came amid reflections on the long arc of Indian history and the enduring nature of religious traditions. Photographs released from the visit showed Mr. Modi offering prayers and spending time at the temple complex.

Officials said the visit was part of a broader engagement with India’s cultural heritage, highlighting themes of remembrance, continuity, and faith that remain central to the nation’s historical consciousness.
