The Congress leader called on students across political affiliations to join the November 1 protest at Ramlila Maidan against alleged vote theft and to defend democratic values

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday urged students and citizens across political affiliations to join the I.N.D.I.A. bloc’s ‘Chalo Delhi’ march on November 1, calling it a collective movement to protect democracy and the Constitution.
In a video message, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said the march to Ramlila Maidan was not the initiative of any single political party but a broader effort to defend the country’s democratic foundations.
“This is not a march of any one political party — this is a march of the soul of Hindustan,” Gandhi said, appealing to people opposed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to participate.
Encouraging student organisations to join regardless of their political affiliations, he said those who believed their freedom of expression, ideas and way of thinking were under threat should take part.
“Don’t worry about the police, don’t worry about lathis,” Gandhi said, asserting that the protest was intended to defend the Constitution and the Indian nation. The march is part of the opposition alliance’s campaign against alleged electoral irregularities and what it describes as “vote chori”.
The I.N.D.I.A. bloc has also planned a ‘public impeachment’ proceeding against Gyanesh Kumar on October 30 at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in connection with allegations surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
