New Delhi: New Delhi is on heightened alert ahead of the October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar, with Delhi Police denying permission for the demonstration and preparing security measures to prevent an unauthorised gathering.
The protest, called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and supported by student and civil society groups, seeks the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the revision of electoral rolls. Organisers have criticised the restrictions and maintained that the demonstration will proceed.
Police have reportedly planned deployments across the capital, established detention facilities and identified multiple checkpoints to prevent protesters from reaching the designated area.
The issue has also reached the Supreme Court, which questioned restrictions affecting public transport and stressed that commuters should not be left without access to Metro and railway services. The court indicated that organisers would need to challenge the denial of permission through the appropriate legal process.
The proposed demonstration comes amid wider Opposition criticism of the Election Commission and concerns over electoral-roll revisions. Opposition leaders have called for accountability, while the BJP has rejected the allegations.
With police restrictions in place and organisers refusing to back down, Saturday’s protest is expected to test the balance between public order and the right to peaceful assembly.
