The Assam Chief Minister recalls Tata’s contributions to cancer care and industrial development, saying he gave the Northeast “dignity in healthcare and ambition in industry”.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on October 9 paid tribute to industrialist Ratan Tata on his second death anniversary, remembering him as a friend who took a personal interest in Assam’s development.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister said, “I remember not just an industrialist, but a friend who chose Assam like few outsiders ever have.” He recalled Tata’s visits to the state and his concern for improving people’s lives.
Highlighting Tata’s contribution to cancer care, the Chief Minister said he worked with the state government to plan 17 hospitals across Assam through the Assam Cancer Care Foundation, turning the initiative into a vital healthcare network.
“He sat with us, mapped 17 hospitals across the state,” the Chief Minister wrote, adding that Assam became the state where Tata’s commitment to healthcare in the later years of his life took shape.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the semiconductor facility being developed at Jagiroad in Morigaon district, saying its expected operationalisation by the end of 2026 would help realise Tata’s vision for Assam’s industrial future.
The township surrounding the facility has been named Ratan Tata Electronics City. “He gave the Northeast dignity in healthcare and ambition in industry…”
