Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections pushed to early 2027 as delimitation and SIR processes remain underway

Shillong: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) will continue under an extended term after the Meghalaya Cabinet on Wednesday approved another six-month extension, further delaying elections in the region.
The first six-month extension is due to end on October 17. With the latest decision, the government has exhausted the maximum one-year extension allowed under law.
MDA spokesperson and Cabinet Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said the extension was approved to allow the completion of the delimitation and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) processes.
He said the elections had earlier been postponed due to law-and-order issues following an “unfortunate incident” in Garo Hills. “Because we have to do delimitation and SIR, and the process is still on,” Shylla said, explaining the need for the fresh extension.
The Cabinet expects the pending processes to be completed within the additional six months, paving the way for GHADC elections early next year.
The extension comes after the government had earlier notified amendments to GHADC election rules, including provisions for a separate electoral roll and changes to voter eligibility.
