“Elections Are About Votes, Not Jail”: Assam CM Hits Back at Gaurav Gogoi

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma responds to Gaurav Gogoi’s jail remark, questioning Rahul Gandhi’s PM prospects and calling for election campaigns to focus on public issues

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has hit back at Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi over his remark that Sarma would go to jail if Rahul Gandhi becomes Prime Minister, asking how Gandhi could become PM while calling him a “mad man”.

Responding to Gogoi’s comments, Sarma said election campaigns should focus on votes and issues affecting people rather than discussions about imprisonment. “When elections come, one should think about votes, not jail,” he said.

Sarma also questioned the timing of the remarks, saying the next general election is not due for another few years. He further criticised Gandhi, saying, “Rahul Gandhi is a mad man; how can he become the PM?”

The Assam Chief Minister said political campaigns should instead centre on issues such as roads, schools, colleges and welfare schemes such as Orunodoi. He also said prisoners do not vote, while the general public decides elections.

Gogoi, Assam Congress president, had on October 2 claimed at a campaign gathering that a case would be filed against Sarma “the very next day” if Gandhi became Prime Minister and alleged that the Assam Chief Minister would subsequently go to jail.

The exchange comes amid an increasingly combative campaign ahead of the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, with Sarma and Gogoi trading sharp political attacks.
