‘Orders From the Top’: CJP’s Ashutosh Ranka Alleges Illegal Detention by Assam Police

CJP leader says police gave no explanation for detaining him and over 40 volunteers ahead of a Guwahati meeting

Guwahati: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leader Ashutosh Ranka has alleged that Assam Police detained him and more than 40 party volunteers on Sunday after officers told him they were acting on orders “from the top”.

Ranka made the allegation after he and the other detainees were released later in the evening following more than 12 hours in custody. He claimed that when he asked police why they had been detained, officers said they did not know the reason but had received orders from the top.

Ranka and CJP volunteers had gathered at the residence of Assam Jatiya Parishad leader Kunki Chowdhury at Chowdhury Tilla in Guwahati for a scheduled regional meeting. They were subsequently taken to the 10th Assam Police Battalion headquarters in Kahilipara.

According to Ranka, the meeting was to discuss the condition of government schools, indigenous rights in Kaziranga and constituency delimitation. He alleged that the detention was intended to prevent the group from raising these issues.

Ranka also targeted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that the Chief Minister was “afraid of being exposed”. The claims have not been independently established.

The Assam Police had not publicly provided details on the grounds for the detentions in the reports cited.
