Residents from Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat gather at Chachal, alleging delays in relief and seeking proper assessment of flood losses
Guwahati: Flood-affected residents from Assam’s Upper Assam districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat staged a protest at Chachal in Guwahati on Wednesday, September 23, demanding immediate relief and compensation, more than two months after the July floods.
Organised by the Raijor Dal, the demonstration was attended by hundreds of affected residents who alleged that several families were yet to receive adequate government assistance despite losing homes, crops, agricultural land and other property.
The protesters demanded a proper assessment of losses and urged the government to ensure that relief and compensation reach all eligible families without further delay.
Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi and party leader Gyanashree Bora joined the protest. Three central leaders of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Assam Jatiya Parishad leader Kunki Chowdhury were also present. Several residents travelled from Upper Assam to participate, with women from affected families also joining the demonstration with their children.
Gogoi had earlier staged a day-long protest on September 17, demanding enhanced relief and Rs 10 lakh compensation for families whose homes or property were destroyed. The protesters reiterated their demand for timely assistance and a comprehensive assessment of losses from the July floods.
