A Lance Naik and a constable were arrested after a business associate was allegedly taken from Patharkandi Railway Station and forced to hand over money
Guwahati: Two police personnel posted at Patharkandi Police Station in Assam’s Sribhumi district have been arrested in connection with an alleged Rs 14 lakh extortion case, police sources said.
According to allegations, a business associate was picked up from Patharkandi Railway Station on September 10 and taken in a police vehicle to the Chandkhira area. The individual was allegedly forced to hand over Rs 14 lakh.
A subsequent investigation reportedly pointed to the involvement of two police personnel, following which Lance Naik Anwar Hussain and Constable Sajal Shuklabaidya were arrested.
Police sources said searches were conducted at the residences of the arrested personnel, during which Rs 2 lakh in cash was allegedly recovered.
Meanwhile, the alleged involvement of Sub-Inspector M. Nangthaiba Singh, who was posted at Patharkandi Police Station, is also under investigation. Singh is reportedly absconding, and police have launched efforts to trace him.
The investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged extortion, determine the whereabouts of the remaining money and ascertain the involvement of others, if any.
